I recently took part as a commissioned artist in Dig a Little Deeper artist symposium.  This gave 10 artists the opportunity to work on site over 10 days and live together as a group.  The sites were interim sites cleared as part of Housing Market Renewal, a government policy to knock down "unsuitable" housing and replace it with new housing. Site specific work breaks down boundaries - is often 'happened upon' by an unsuspecting audience.  It opens our eyes to environments we inhabit and which otherwise can go unnoticed. 
 
It's social benefit is in raising awareness - beyond the conventions and confines of galleries or other insitiutions which might be percieved as elitist or exclusive. 
 
Inclusivity is the key.
